Georgie's Trip
Hi Everyone,
Started our trip with a stopover in Cape Town. I was very impressed with Cape Town. We had trips to Table mountain, the Waterfront and town and the wine region. There was lots to do and really three days was not long enough. I would like to go back some time for a proper holiday.
Our next port of call was Perth. We hired a car and drove south stopping at Busseltown to look at the Margaret River area for a couple of days. We then went on to Albany where there is a rugged coastline with beautiful coastal walks and lovely sandy bays. Then back to Fremantle where we were very lucky and able to rent a loft style apartment in an old converted warehouse. After hotels/motels and eating in restaurants it was nice to be able to cook and do our own thing. Fremantle is a very interesting town with nice old buildings and lots of history dating to the first settlers.
Our next stop was Alice Springs which was not at all as we expected. I don't know quite what we were expecting, anyway, something a bit smaller. I think maybe we had been watching too many old Australian films. Early next morning we set out for Ayers Rock Resort stopping on the way for breakfast at a Camel farm. Everything in Ayers Rock revolves around sunset and sunrise so we were up at 3am for the next few days. Ken remarked that it must be great marketing strategy to get hundreds of people up in the middle of the night to drive out to sit on little camp stools drinking tea and looking at a big red rock. It was a great experience, one we wouldn't have missed but I think we will be among the 99% of people who never return .
From the searing heat of Ayers Rock to the torrential rain that greeted us in Cairns. Our first night was spent in an hotel we have been to before. The tropical gardens of the hotel were as beautiful as we remembered but the rain was something else. Most of the evening was spent catching up on the washing and ironing which unfortunately is inevitable on a trip like this. Next day we pick up our camper van which was nearly new and very well equipped. Originally we had planned to go up to Port Douglas but as the forecast was for more rain and possible floods we headed south towards the sun. We made Townsville by late afternoon and we were very lucky to do so. We came through a good foot of flood water at Ingham and they closed the highway 2 hours after we had gone through. The next two days were spent running ahead of the rain. Rockhampton was very nice, we visited the botanical gardens and had a drive around some beautiful coastline. The sun was shining so we slowed down staying a couple of days at a time at caravan sites beside the ocean. I met a very nice Australian lady from Gympie in Burrum Head, she told me she was a member of the U3A and was surprised to learn I was a member of the U3A in Spain. We are in Mooloolabar and today the rain has caught up with us so we spent the morning in Underwater World and this afternoon I am in the Internet cafe. In a few days we are off to New Zealand.
